One of the most common questions we get before an install has nothing to do with color or durability — it’s “is this going to smell up my whole house?”
Yes, There’s Odor — But It Depends on the Coating
There’s odor during application with almost any coating system. What varies a lot is how strong it is and how long it lingers, and that comes down to the type of coating being used.
Traditional epoxy coatings tend to have a stronger, more chemical smell, and because epoxy cures slowly, that smell can hang around for a day or two. Polyaspartic and polyurea systems — what we use — cure much faster, which shrinks the odor window dramatically. We’re talking hours, not days.
What to Expect on Install Day
During application, expect a noticeable smell in the garage itself — that’s the coating curing and doing its job. We recommend keeping the garage door open and the area ventilated while we work and for a few hours afterward.
If it’s an attached garage, cracking a window in the house or running an exhaust fan for that first day is a smart move — especially for anyone sensitive to strong smells, like kids, pets, or people with respiratory sensitivities.
How Long It Actually Lasts
With our polyaspartic systems, most homeowners report the strong smell is gone within 24 hours, often less. Compare that to traditional epoxy, where off-gassing can continue for several days during its slower cure. Faster cure means faster return to a normal-smelling garage — not just a tougher floor.
The Bottom Line
Yes, expect some smell on install day. No, it shouldn’t linger for a week. If a contractor tells you there’s zero odor at all, be skeptical.
